I don’t watch much TV. As such, I don’t see many ads.
Today, however, I was spinning the flight from yesterday out of my legs on a bike at the gym and, of course, the TVs were on.
I saw an ad for a product which is supposed to ‘make you regular’ as well as supply your body with probiotics. The women in the ad joked about how they’d come to believe that begin irregular was regular and had grown used to the subsequent discomfort associated with it. At the end of the ad, they all drank the beverage and concluded happily that now that they are regular, they will drink this thing every day.
No need to worry about the fact that you’re also getting sugar, whey protein concentrate, modified cornstarch and corn starch, gelatin, malic acid and sodium citrate, or aspartame to replace sugar in the sugar free variety.
There is actually an entire website devoted to listing all the side effects of this product; following is a partial list of some of the culprits and resulting effects:
- Cultured Grade A Reduced Fat Milk – very common allergen
- Red Wheat Bran – very common allergen
- Carmine (For Color) – “natural” red dye”
- Natural Flavor – Who knows? FDA won’t tell us.
- Inulin & Fructose – Difficult To Absorb
- Sodium Citrate -preservative and flavor additive
- Sugar
- Rolled Oats
- Corn Starch
- Rolled Wheat Flake
- Modified Corn Starch
They forgot to mention the long term consequences on bone health resulting from long term dairy ingestion.
How about this:
Eat more fresh vegetables and fruits to get plenty of fiber, avoid all the processed foods that harm the GI tract like grains, dairy and legumes and then be regular without side effects?
It’s not too hard…
I’m not a perfect paleo just yet, but since January 1 I have removed 99% of obvious sugar with the exception of fruits, I have had trace amounts of grains, and no dairy. I have a ways to go, but my diet is super clean compared to what it use to be. For one who use to rely on laxatives daily, I haven’t had to use them at all since Jan 1. I am soooo regular. I’m amazed. Thanks for being here and sharing your knowledge with us.
That is fantastic testimonial; thank you, as well, for sharing your story. The more people who get the Paleo message out there, the healthier we’ll be as a society!
I was the live-in help for an elderly man when I was in college (free room and board if I kept the house clean and made sure there was food in the house). Every morning, he’d raise his prune in a toast and say, “A prune a day keeps the prostate doctor away.” Still makes me laugh!
Oh, geez… my grandfather used to do the same thing! In fact, it wasn’t even prunes, but prune juice, completely devoid of fiber. What the???
Hello everyone,
I just got the book last night, so not much time to read it. But I am curious: is Greek yougurt bad for you as dairy? What do you all say?
Nina
Hello, Nina, Dairy is not part of the Paleo diet. Have you read Dr. Cordain’s The Paleo Diet? It’s a must read. He goes into detail as to why we are not meant to be eating/drinking dairy. It’s one of the most acidic things we can eat. When we ingest dairy, our body buffers the pH by leaching calcium from the bones, which, over time, sets the stage for osteopenia then osteoporosis. Better to source your calcium from alkaline sources.. like spinach, for example! Calcium intake alone is not what we need to consider; rather, it’s calcium balance.
