Is Change Taking Place?
An article in the Times yesterday by Mark Bittman has got me thinking.
He wrote about how, based on a recent cross country road trip, he feels that there are some encouraging trends taking place, including:
“Supermarkets selling better food.
Alternatives to standard fare are turning up in unlikely restaurants.
Small towns and the like that may previously have been considered hopeless now offer interesting food in creative restaurants.”
I admit, I’m spoiled by what’s available here in Los Angeles, and as such, my perception of what a typical grocer might offer would be skewed if it weren’t for the fact that I have clients around the world filling me in on what they can and cannot easily procure.
Even having said that, though, I do see some favorable things going on. Of course, you know where I’m going with this: kale. Simply seeing kale offered more regularly as a menu option always makes me smile a little…
When you do see something healthy offered (read: Paleo) at a surprising place, do something! Not many things speak louder than money in the eyes of a merchant, so if you’re at a cafe and see there’s an offering of freshly hard boiled eggs to go along with a piece of fresh fruit- partake! Save it for later if you’re not hungry.
I did just that recently at Nordstrom’s cafe. If they sell out of these healthy options, it’s not too hard to figure out what the next step is: keep stocking up with the good stuff!
Do you agree with the idea that perhaps favorable change might be in the air, even if it is in little bits and pieces strewn about all the other junk that, unfortunately, seems to be omni present? What do you see in your neck of the woods?
I’d love to hear some input from wherever you readers are!
