Make Your Own Soft Drinks- Hoorah! (She Says Sarcastically…)
I came across an advert for a product that made me feel as though I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
A device which enables one to make their own soft drinks, both diet and ‘regular’ at home, for a fraction of the cost of what they’d pay for a six pack of Coca Cola, for example, the ‘soda stream’.
One can opt for the regular versions, the sugar free, or, my favorite, the ‘energy’ options, the last of which has an ingredient panel which includes: sodium citrate, acesulfame postassium (you know this as Nutrasweet), sucralose (oh, good, some Splenda, too, for good measure), natural and artificial flavor, a few vitamins and then a little extra potassium sorbate as a preservative.
(Incidentally, if you’re someone who thinks you’re doing yourself a favor by choosing Nutrasweet over sugar to save calories, you’re kidding yourself. True, that one can of diet soda might contain less calories than its corn-syrupy cousin, but Acesulfame K has been shown in studies to stimulate dose-dependent insulin secretion. That’s right; you can set yourself up for an insulin response and blood sugar crash just as nicely with the fake stuff. Another reason to skip it!)
So, here’s the question: why would you drink this stuff? How about a nice, chilled glass of Tilex, while you’re at it?
Did you know that people today statistically need far less embalming fluid postmortem because so many have done such a good job at literally ‘preserving themselves’?
Ever heard of drinking water?
